BIOGRAPHY

Yuntong Han, a rising Chinese tenor, is quickly making his mark in the world of opera and concert performance. With a voice described as "reliably lyrical" (Art de Vivre), Yuntong Han continues to ascend as a tenor of rare versatility and emotional depth. Currently based in Los Angeles, he is a Domingo-Colburn-Stein Young Artist at LA Opera, where he will perform roles including Bardolfo in Verdi’s Falstaff and Amon in Philip Glass’s Akhnaten in the 2025/26 season. His recent engagements also include Tybalt in Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette and covering Pinkerton in Puccini’s Madama Butterfly at LA Opera (2024/25 season).

In the 2023/24 season, Han garnered acclaim as a National Finalist in the Metropolitan Opera Laffont Competition, where he represented the Central Region and received the Judith Raskin Award. That same season, he captivated audiences as Roméo in Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette at Indiana University’s Opera and Ballet Theater under the baton of Stefan Lano. As a Gerdine Young Artist at Opera Theatre of Saint Louis in 2023, Han covered Cavaradossi in Puccini’s Tosca and Elder Hayes in Floyd’s Susannah.

Earlier, he appeared as Don Ottavio in Mozart’s Don Giovanni, Ruggero in Puccini’s La Rondine, and Tamino in Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte at Indiana University and participated in the world premiere of a new opera, Anne Frank, composed by Pulitzer Prize Winner Shulamit Ran, as part of the ensemble. During his undergraduate years, he learned and successfully portrayed Nemorino in Donizetti’s L’elisir d’amore, Rodolfo in Puccini’s La Bohème, and Lucano in L’incoronazione di Poppea in main-stage productions at the school.

Han’s concert career is equally active and distinguished. In 2025, he will perform as the tenor soloist in Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 with the LA Dream Orchestra and in Haydn’s The Creation with the Sequoia Symphony. His earlier appearances included the Tchaikovsky Spectacular Concert with the Chicago Symphony at Ravinia Festival and the Center Stage Concert with the Saint Louis Symphony.

A dedicated artist with a rich academic background, Han gained a bachelor's degree in aircraft manufacturing engineering in China before he fully committed to his vocal career. Then, he earned his second bachelor’s degree at New England Conservatory under the tutelage of MaryAnn McCormick, a Performer’s Diploma and a master’s degree in Vocal Performance from Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, where he studied with Heidi Grant Murphy and Kevin Murphy. Now he is closely working with Dr. Stephen King and Susan Graham at LA Opera.
